Along one of my daily walking paths, there is a small woodland area that I’m working to clean up. Over the back of that, there is also a large rocky area where I’ve been building up stacks of logs to create biomass for plants and bushes, etc. to grow. That had been going well until recently when a herd of wild hogs arrived in the area.
The piggies love rooting around in the logs for insects and basically scatter them everywhere so about once a week, I rebuild the stacks. I also fill in a few of the larger holes they dig with rocks. It takes almost an hour and some of the logs and rocks are pretty darn heavy so it’s a solid workout.
It may not be obvious from the photos but the weight these hogs can move is mind boggling. They are also able to dig large craters in really dense ground that is mostly sharp rock. Having them work over my stacks of logs is useful because it speeds up their breakdown but they also badly damage the root systems of trees. Hopefully they’ll move on to a new area soon.
